The Merton and Wandsworth Post Covid Assessment Service (PCAS), provided by Central London Community Healthcare NHS Trust (CLCH), is changing from 1 April 2025.
Our priority is to make sure that we are making the best use of our resources, and that those resources are used equitably. This service has been running since 2021, supporting people across Merton and Wandsworth with Long Covid symptoms. Referrals to this service have been reducing and there are currently only 30 patients being seen, all of whom will complete their treatment programme before this service changes.
Despite fewer patients being referred to this service, we know that there is still a need for support for patients who are experiencing symptoms of Long Covid. We are working together to streamline and integrate services across primary, community and secondary care to provide maximum benefit for local people.
From April 2025, GPs will continue to support patients with Long Covid and refer them directly to the most appropriate services for their needs, for example:
- Specialist respiratory services for symptoms like shortness of breath.
- NHS Talking Therapies or specialist mental health services for issues like fatigue or emotional wellbeing.
GPs will continue to be the main point of contact to make sure patients get the right advice and care they need. If a patient is experiencing Long Covid symptoms, they should continue to seek advice from their GP as normal.
South West London Integrated Care Board (SWLICB) is working closely with CLCH and GP services to ensure patients transition smoothly to other services if further care is required.
When will these changes happen?
The service will remain open until 1 April 2025, but the way support is provided will gradually change:
- 1 November 2024 – 1 February 2025: Patients will still complete the full rehabilitation programme (approximately three months) before being discharged to their GP for follow-up support.
- 2 February – 29 February 2025: Patients will have up to four rehabilitation sessions before being discharged to their GP for follow-up support.
- From 1 March 2025: Patients will receive a one-off assessment and advice session. The outcome of this session will be shared with their GP to refer to other specialist services where appropriate.
After 1 April 2025
From April 2025 onwards, patients with Long Covid symptoms will be referred by their GP straight to specific services available in South West London that will best support their needs and symptoms. For example, services to support symptoms including fatigue, breathlessness or mental health.
We will ensure that care continues to be accessible, whether through specialist services or primary care teams.
