The term ‘self-neglect’ covers a wide range of behaviour neglecting to care for one’s personal hygiene, health or surroundings. We’ve seen a rise in self-neglect cases over the last two years, particularly for older people. This session will explore how you can spot the signs someone is at risk of self-neglect. He will also provide practical guidance about how to start difficult conversations and respond to those at risk, while maintaining autonomy.
About the speaker

Haidar Ramadan, Designate for Adult Safeguarding for Sutton, practiced within the NHS for 15 years as a senior musculoskeletal practitioner. For 16 years he worked as a senior and visiting lecturer in MSK medicine and professional practice at various UK universities, Europe and Middle East. In 2003 he finished reading for MSc in Health Sciences by Research. He is a fellow of the Higher Education Academy after obtaining a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education Teaching. He has extensive experience in healthcare regulation and education. Currently he is a visiting fellow at London South Bank University.
In 2016, Haidar joined the Continuing Care Team for younger people with physical disabilities. This involved complex case management with extensive safeguarding and mental capacity considerations. In 2018 He became a Safeguarding Adults Lead and later he became Head of Adult Safeguarding for Central London Community Health NHS Trust. He supported various projects including embedding the safeguarding champions’ role in community healthcare settings. Recently Haidar joined NHS South West London ICB as Designate for Adult Safeguarding for Sutton and is working across the South West London ICS to ensure the delivery of the safeguarding agenda across south west London.
