The largest NHS vaccination programme in history is continuing to expand in south west London with the offer of a targeted spring booster for people most at risk of Covid-19 infection, including over-75s, those with a weakened immune system and older adult care home residents.
Following latest guidance from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI), an additional dose of the Covid-19 vaccination is recommended for a select group of people, to maximise protection against coronavirus throughout spring and summer.
The national booster roll-out has already started in adult care homes but vaccinations begin today (17 April) for eligible over-75s and people most at risk.
South west London’s Medical Director Dr John Byrne said many people will already have received an invitation through the NHS app, where they can also book their appointment.
Dr Byrne said they can also arrange their vaccination using the NHS National Booking System or by calling 119, while text messages and letters are being sent to those without the app or not actively using it.
The total number of Covid-19 jabs administered in south west London has reached almost 5.4 million since coronavirus vaccinations first started in December 2020.
Covid-19 hospital admissions remain highest among over-75s, with the rate currently standing at 34.9 admissions per 100,000 people for 75-84 year-olds and 74.5 per 100,000 for those aged 85 and above.
Dr Byrne (pictured) said: “As a society we’re learning to live with Covid but for many it is still a virus that can cause severe illness and hospitalise older people or those with weakened immune systems.
“So it is important everyone who is eligible comes forward for a booster as soon as possible to top up their immunity against what is still a serious virus – the vaccine remains the best possible defence for you and your loved ones.”
Dr Chris Streather, Medical Director for the NHS in London said: “We have seen the success of the Covid vaccination over the past few years which has allowed us to live without restriction and getting a booster jab when offered remains the best method of protection.”
There will be over 300 sites offering the jab across London, with most appointments being delivered in communities by pharmacies and GPs.
Spring booster appointments will be available until 30 June 2023.
Covid-19 vaccinations for everyone who was aged five on or before 31 August 2022 will also end after that date, following recent advice from the JCVI. After 30 June, the NHS offer will become more targeted to those at increased risk, usually during seasonal campaigns.
